Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Guidance

What is an AED?

An AED is an automated computerized medical device used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are programmed to analyze an individual's heart rhythm, recognize rhythms that require defibrillation, and provide voice and visual instructions for the device operator, including if indicated, to push the button to deliver an electric shockwave. These devices provide a lifesaving bridge during critical minutes between the onset of a sudden cardiac arrest and the arrival of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel.

Responsibilities

The district safety department will ensure compliance with state and local regulations regarding AEDs. Maintain an inventory of District AEDS and their locations. Coordinate, conduct and document biannual inspections to verify AEDs are operational, including replacing batteries, pads and other supplies. The safety department will assess the District's AED program and make recommendations for improving the program.

Where Are They?

AEDs are securely mounted in cabinets and located throughout campus. They are in highly visible locations. If you think an AED is not in a highly visible area or not easily accessible, please contact the District's safety department. The list below shows where on campus AEDs are located.
