Crime Prevention Tips

If you see something, say something!

By following some simple strategies you can significantly reduce the chances of theft from happening to you. Each person needs to take every opportunity presented to them to avoid becoming a victim.

Report Suspicious Persons

Call the College of Marin Campus Police, (415) 485-9696, to report suspicious activity. When calling, provide as much information as possible, including the time you noticed the person, the clothing worn, the shoes worn, and the manner in which the person walked. In the event of an emergency or if you see a crime in progress, dial 911.

Pay Attention to Your Surroundings

Always be aware of your surroundings. If someone looks suspicious or makes you feel uneasy, avoid that person. Go inside a store or business if necessary. If you must make a call while you are walking, go to a safe, public place if possible. Make your call, then conceal your phone the way you would conceal your cash before going back outside.

Motor Vehicles

Use one of the three recommended deterrents:

  • A club that is case-hardened steel
  • A kill-switch or
  • An alarm

Using these type devices or combinations of the three helps to deter motor vehicle theft but it is not a guarantee.

  • Park in lighted areas
  • Lock your vehicle
  • Place personal property out of sight
Bicycles

If you ride a bicycle on campus secure the main portion of the frame and front tire to the bicycle rack with a quality hardened type lock; cable locks and chains can be easily defeated with bolt cutters.

Everything Else

Engrave your property with your drivers’ license number.

Record the make, model and serial numbers of all valuables and keep the record in a safe place.

Do not leave your possessions unattended at any time. This is to include locations in the Library, the cafeteria and in classrooms. If you fall asleep consider your possessions unattended.

Professional theft rings travel from one campus to another looking for easy opportunities to collect on your negligence. No police department can function effectively without the assistance of a responsible community. We need your help and cooperation; only in this manner can we work together for a safe campus.

At the ATM

Use ATMs in well-lit, populated areas. Store and bank ATMs during the day are best. Scan the area before using the ATM. Be aware of people loitering nearby for no apparent reason, and go to another location if you feel uneasy. Cash in hand makes you a possible target—put your cash away before leaving the ATM. If you suspect danger, promptly enter the nearest store or building.

At Home

When you are exiting or unloading your vehicle, follow these precautions:

  • Be cautious of anyone on the street who makes you feel uneasy.
  • If a person makes you feel uneasy, go inside and lock the doors. If you are in a vehicle, stay in the vehicle with locked doors and windows, or drive away and come back later.
  • Never open your door to anyone you do not know.
