Emergency Showers and Eyewash Stations Guidelines

Guidelines

  • Be aware of where emergency showers/eyewash stations are in your work area.
  • Emergency eyewash stations and deluge showers shall be in accessible locations that require no more than 10 seconds for the injured person to reach.
  • Keep the area around the emergency equipment clear and unobstructed.
  • The emergency shower/eyewash must be inspected (and documented on accompanying tag) at least monthly (CCR Title 8, Section 5162) to flush the line and verify proper operation.
  • Do not hesitate to use the emergency equipment in case of an emergency. Any delay could lead to irreversible injury.
  • Keep energized electrical equipment away from eyewashes and emergency showers.
  • Never use emergency showers/eyewash stations for non-emergency purposes. Use the equipment for its intended purpose only.

How To Use an Emergency Shower & Eyewash Station

Emergency showers and eyewash stations are crucial workplace safety measures where employees handle hazardous materials or chemicals. Remember DO NOT work alone when working with hazardous materials. Here’s a concise guide on how to use them properly:

Immediate Action
  • When hazardous materials come into contact with your eyes, time is critical.
  • Proceed to the nearest emergency shower or eyewash station promptly.
Activate the Unit
  • Eyewash stations are designed for ease of use, especially during distress.
  • Activate the eyewash station by pushing the lever or engaging the foot pedal.
Flush the Eyes
  • Position your face over the sink and open your eyelids using your fingers.
  • Rinse your eyes continuously with water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Keep the eyes open and rotate the eyeballs in all directions to remove contamination from around the eyes. An injured person may need help holding their eyelids open.
  • If your eyes do not require flushing, protect the eyes from cross contamination.
Remove Contaminated Clothing
  • Remove all contaminated clothing; contact lenses, shoes, jewelry, etc.
Full-Body Coverage (Shower Stations)
  • Emergency showers provide full-body coverage.
  • Stand under the shower and rinse your entire body.
  • For face splashes keep your eyes closed, mouth shut and decontaminate your face and head.
Seek Medical Attention
  • After using the station, seek medical help promptly. Or ask a colleague.
  • Provide a copy of the SDS for the chemicals involved in the accident to give to medical professionals.
